A Dear
Tauqir Ali
Thank you
for your email. I could not respond to you in time as I was outside
the country. I have gone through your question regarding the
intellectual insolvency of our Islamic scholars regarding the
total number of verses in the Qur’an. Frankly speaking, I have not
researched this issue. However, as I checked the different
translations of the Qur’an written by contemporary Muslims scholars, I
found that they are at odds on this topic as well. According to their
point of views, the total numbers of verses vary from 6237 to
6350-6666. However, Rashad Khalifa [a self proclaimed messenger of
this century] has declared a total number of 6234 verses. This numeral
is divisible by the number nineteen which is according to his claim is
the common denominator throughout the Qur’an’s mathematical system.
It is interesting to note that his proclaimed Messengership is based
on a number 19 because it in particular is the miracle as he received
it from God as a token of his Messengership. In my opinion, however,
understanding the meaning of the Qur’anic verses is more important.
The simple solution of this uncertainty is that you should spend some
of your precious time and add the total verses of all the chapters of
the Qur’an and then sum them up, it will give you the total number of
the Quranic verses. This independent effort will take you out from
this perplexity and it will be great help for me from your end.
Best Regards
